Paris

This is my favorite picture from Paris. It's small here, but I hope you can see the lights twinkling. I guess this is how most people imagine Paris - the glamorous city of lights. I wish I could say that my visit there was as glitzy or romantic as this picture hints at. But actually, it was just hot and sweaty. Lying in my hotel bed that night - I've never been more miserable. 4,000 people died during that heat spell. I felt like I was going to be one of them!

My mom and I got on a train to escape the Amsterdam night life as I said. The train was going to Paris. We shared a car with 4 guys from Berlin. They were really cool. They gave us a map of Paris, suggested a hotel a little bit outside of the city, and told us the good places to shop. They also offered us some sandwiches. It's so funny to see people pull bread and cheese out of their backpacks. But we did that a few times too.

The leaves in this picture remind me of autumn. This is Notre Dame. I didn't see anything like a hunchback, but there was an enormously tall priest in a red cloak and sneakers.

The Louvre was closed - it's closed on Tuesdays.

You know as I'm writing this I realize that it's really not my own trip to Paris that is so special to me, but more the idea of France. I know so many French people or people that have been there or live there. My trip just feels like a small part of all the experiences I've had with them.

9/11 drama & fame

Well... I survived the trip, but just barely. My family got to the airport 15 min before our scheduled flight. Half of us got left behind parking the cars while the rest ran into the terminal. However, even this smaller group got separated at the security check. I jumped onto the shuttle and left everyone on the wrong side of the airport. I got to the gate and ran up to the plane on the runway. I figured I'd be the only one taking the flight and the rest would catch up on a later flight. But then I looked over at the plane next to ours and my brother was rushing up to it. That plane was going to Chicago. He aparently found this out and ran over to me in the right plane. So I had a bit of company as my uncle was with him. The three of us headed out to Jacksonville and left the rest of the fam in Maryland!

When we landed, we stopped for breakfast and waited for everyone else on the later flight. I noticed a group of black guys carrying musical instruments coming over to our area. When they got to us, I realized I recognized one of the guys from tv. Actually it turned out to be Reuben Studdard the guy that won American Idol. My brother forbid me to get his autograph - mainly because I only knew the guy's name since they had told me - he could have been P. Diddy for all I knew. When I told my sister later that we saw him in Burger King, she asked if he was working there!!!

List of celebrities I've encountered - that I know of

1. Maurice Bernard (General Hospital) - I met him and talked with his wife about homeschooling
2. Michael Bloomberg - long story, but he sent me this amazing vase of roses a while back & a letter recently
3. Cal Ripken - I don't like base ball, but oh well
4. Akiva Goldsmith (screenwriter Beautiful Minds etc) - pictures
5. Josh Harris (Christian author) - he was my pastor
6. Toby Mackeehan (Christian music artist) - came up to me at a concert

I can't put these guys on the list but my dad ran into Senator McCain at a bookstore in Arlington. And my mom saw Dick Cheney in her office bldg in Arlington.

:) I really want to be famous someday.

9/11 fears

I will be taking a flight later today. Why of all days do I have to travel on September 11? Just now I was listening to a song called, "I Can Only Imagine." It talks about the awe that we will experience when we're standing in God's presence. I'd love to talk about that here. I probably will discuss my faith if I survive my trip tomorrow. For now, I'll just tell a little joke to help lighten the tension you all feel regarding my dangerous situation flying somewhere on 9/11.

Heaven is where the police are British, the chefs Italian, the mechanics German, the lovers French, and it is all organized by the Swiss.

Strange Encounters Abroad

My mom and I had decided to head over to Cologne for the day. We had a wonderful time strolling around the city, shopping, and looking at the sites. Cologne has a marvelous cathedral which rivals Notre Dame. There's old fashioned cafes, cobble stone streets, and old men playing guitars (When it's hot, they play barefoot with their feet dangling in the fountains.)

Speaking of which my mom and I were walking along the Rhein when this little old man came up and latched on to us. Somehow, he felt it was his job to give us a tour of the city. He was friendly enough, but he was taking us off the beaten track. Plus he kept trying to hold my arm which I didn't like. My mom and I tried to lose him by going into a chapel (He said he couldn't go inside.) but when we came out again he was still there. So we told him we had to leave and doubled back to the train station.

We decided to drop by Amsterdam on the way home. Granted, we had just traveled 4 hrs from my apartment in north western Germany to get to Cologne. Amsterdam is in another country, 4 hrs further and not quite on the way home. But my mom absolutely wanted to see Amsterdam so... we left.

The only people I know who actually want to see Amsterdam specifically go there to smoke pot. Most people told me not to go there since they know that I don't smoke pot and that I have a horror of stumbling onto red light districts. I was a little nervous to begin with.

Anyways, there was a black man and a white woman on the train that got on at different stations. I noticed that after a time they started talking briefly to each other. The man carried a small black bag. To be honest, I really wasn't paying much attention at all. But when I made a comment to my mom about something, she didn't answer. Finally, she signaled the two people to me. Later I noticed that the woman now had the bag. I didn't think too much of it. I mean it really wasn't any of my buisness. But then, all of a sudden, my mother turned to the man and made this strange comment, almost like she was criticizing him. She mentioned something from the Bible which I could understand, but it was very cryptic. I nearly lost it. I mean, we're on a train to Amsterdam. These two people act like they don't know each other, but then casually exchange a small bag containing who knows what. We definitely do not know them, but somehow my mom decides to open communication with them by a secret code type statement! The man just looked startled and soon got off the train. The woman stayed until we got to the Amsterdam main station. She seemed annoyed and kept looking at us with a confused expression on her face.

When we did land in Amsterdam, it was nightfall and we hadn't a clue of where to go. My mom wasn't worried about the encounter, but now I realized that the only thing risky about going to Amsterdam was going with my mom. I thought it would be best to leave. But no night trains go from Amsterdam to Germany. So in the end, we bought a ticket to Paris...

racing thoughts (audio)

racing thoughts

I haven't slept for the past three nights so things are a little surreal right now. Last night I spent hours at my keyboard. Sometimes when I play late at night, people come into the room and watch me. It always frightens me to see them standing there.

Last night I came up with the brilliant plan of working on a cd. Hopkins has this awesome digital media center and I've always wanted to do a project like that. You know I can't express how thankful I am to God for the gift of music.

For so many years MIT has held this alluring fascination to me. It's unbelievabley strange that I decided to give up that dream right when I finally attained it. This song from an a cappella group is so amazing. I guess I'll never stop being attracted to this totally ecletic school. It always inspires me.

Tomorrow I start graduate school at Johns Hopkins. I'm really excited. I guess that's why I can't sleep. Although I can't help imagining what it would have been like to have started at Stanford this semester.

The idea of Stanford totally scares and excites me. When I flew into San Francisco airport, I had never been to CA before. I looked out the window and I saw miles of green hills. I think I knew right then that I wanted to live there. But it's so far from home and what I know.
